August 28: Working with Trauma: When the Body Has No Words

Trauma often is a formidable roadblock in the care and treatment of our clients. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms are automatic, compulsive and unresponsive to cognitive or verbal interventions. This means that many popular modalities such as CBT, Solution Focused or Narrative therapies either do not work or have limited effectiveness. Without addressing trauma, the therapy often only goes so far and then seems to stall out. Trauma informed care is not a modality per se; it is an effective framework to understand how to assess and treat trauma and PTSD. With an understanding of trauma informed care, you will be able to build rapport, prioritize presenting problems, and learn to minimize the danger of triggering or re-traumatizing the client. Once client trauma is properly addressed, then the clinician will find that CBT or other verbal modalities will suddenly be re-energized.

3 CE credits will be provided to participants.
